This is why it’s always best to consult with your dentist. Decide together on which procedure is best for your smile makeover. But if you live in the Lakeview area of Chicago and want to know more about full and partial dentures, please read on!

What exactly are dentures?

Dentures are defined as a removable plate or frame that holds one or more artificial teeth. We generally tend to refer to the types of dentures in two categories. These two categories are full or “complete dentures” and “partial dentures.” Their differences are outlined below.

Complete dentures – Complete dentures are necessary when all of your teeth are missing or are required to be removed. Two types of complete dentures are used depending on an individual’s needs. “Conventional” refer to dentures for long term use, where as “immediate” are typically for temporary use. After the removal of several teeth, patients may be required to use immediate dentures for up to twelve weeks. This allows time for swelling to decrease and the gums to heal. Conventional dentures will then be fitted and can last for several years or until a new fitting may become necessary.

Partial Dentures – Partials are a great solution for those who still have several healthy teeth on their upper or lower gums. This way you do not have to remove perfectly healthy teeth, but can still improve your smile and ability to chew. The partial dentures stay in place by using a pink or gum colored plastic base that holds steady in your mouth. If additional support is needed, a metal framework can be added.

Types of Dentures

What to expect from prosthodontics

The dentist or prosthodontist starts by determining what type of denture appliance is right for you. After diagnosis has been made, they will make several impressions of your mouth and inner jaw, as well take some measurements to determine spacing. This gives the dentist an exact copy of your mouth, jaw and gums which will be used to build your dentures.

After impressions are taken, it’s time to choose your new smile. You will get to choose the color, size and shape of your new teeth. If there was anything you didn’t like about your natural set of teeth, please inform your dentist. Your new dentures will be a whole new you, so choose wisely!
